Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS)
Why take WHMIS?
WHMIS has been introduced into the workplace to help reduce the number of injuries resulting from handling chemicals.
Whom does WHMIS involve?
The chemical supplier, who provides the label and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
The employer, who provides the education and training to the worker handling the chemical.
Labels and MSDS provide much of the information, but they alone do not protect anyone. Use of this information to develop and implement safe work procedures, through effective training programs, reduces chemical handling incidents.
Who needs WHMIS education?
Everyone who comes in contact with or who may be exposed to the chemicals needs WHMIS education.
All workers, who work with or near chemicals.
Supervisors are responsible for overseeing the work being performed with chemicals. The supervisor is expected to recognize and correct any deficiencies.
Management decides who does what job and with what chemical. They must have label and M.S.D.S. information to assist in developing safe work procedures.
What benefit does your company achieve from this course?
Ordering workers to do it this way seldom produces lasting change.
When the reasons for the control measures and protective equipment requirements are made clear to workers, it is likely they will follow instructions. Because management, supervisors and workers have all been trained in the same methods, using the WHMIS system, everyone is more safety conscious.
Knowing is the first step to successful education and training.
